Abstract: |
Why and when will employees with proactive personality take charge in the workplace? We propose prosocial motivation as the driving force underlying employees’ proactive personality and their engagement in taking charge. Drawing on servant leadership theory, we further hypothesize, when their direct supervisors adopt servant leadership practice, proactive employees are more likely to be prosocially motivated and subsequently take charge more at work. Three-wave data collected from 274 retail employees and their supervisors in Southern China supported our multi-level moderated mediation model. This research enriches extant proactivity literature and brings important implications for managers to capitalize on employee proactivity. |
