Abstract: |
How is strategic consensus formed in top management team (TMT)? Prior literature provides inadequate and confusing evidence on this question. Based on information processing theory and social identity perspective, this research explores the formation process of strategic consensus and its effect on team performance. By analyzing the survey data from 126 firms, we find that elaboration of task-relevant information has increasing positive effect on TMT strategic consensus, while collective team identification has a positive effect on TMT strategic consensus. Furthermore, the relationship between elaboration of task-relevant information and TMT strategic consensus is strengthened by collective team identification. Finally, we also find that TMT strategic consensus has an inverted-U shaped effect on team performance. Our findings offer more insights into the formation process of strategic consensus and also provide strong guidance for TMT to benefit from strategic consensus. |
