Abstract: |
In a recent provocation series paper of Human Resource Management Journal, Angrave, Charlwood, Kirkpatrick, Lawrence, and Stuart (2016) have criticized that a lack of sufficient big data-based practices and research in human resource management (HRM) area has limited its advancement. Although Angrave et al. (2016) emphasized the importance of applying big data approach in HRM research, a clear guidance about how to integrate big data approach in HRM is absent. This review, therefore, examines the development, benefits, and characteristics of big data and how to apply big data approach in HRM research. In addition, it summarizes the definition and application of big data as well as a general procedure of conducting HRM research based on big data. It then discusses six methods and four platforms of conducting big data HRM research. Finally, it identifies eight potential topics ranging from micro, meso and macro levels of HRM research that can be studied through using big data approach. |
