Abstract: |
Empowering leadership is targeted at increasing employee empowerment, autonomy, and creativity. However, the question of under what conditions empowering leadership works has received insufficient attention. Guided by the interactionist perspective of creativity, we examined the moderating influence of a task-related (task nonroutiness) and a person-related (self-regulatory focus) factor in the empowering leadership – creativity connection, via the path of creative self-efficacy. Based on survey data from 305 employee-leader pairs in a Chinese company, we found that task non-routineness strengthened the positive association between empowering leadership and creative self-efficacy for promotion-focused employees. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. |
