Abstract:
Alliance experience plays a vital role in the stage of alliance formation. However, there exist theoretical and empirical gaps and controversies in its effect on alliance formation and alliance governance structure. Drawing on the method of meta-analysis, we have searched and coded previous empirical studies systematically, generating a database of 91 empirical studies in all. Through classifying alliance experience into general and partner-specific alliance experience, the research first compares the different effects of these two types of alliance experience on alliance formation and alliance governance structure. Moving forward, to address the disadvantage of this classification in explaining the effect of alliance experience on alliance governance structure, we expand the classification of alliance experience in terms of governance structure. Deeply, our research also provides evidence about how the contextual contingencies affect alliance experience-alliance governance structure link with the help of meta-regression.
