Abstract:
China is going through rapid transformation in its economic and social landscape, causing many to doubt the utility of traditional wisdom. One such challenge is in the leadership realm regarding humility, a virtue deeply rooted in Chinese culture. In this study, we build on network analysis and ego-centric perspective, and examine whether, how, and when humility is related to leaders’ own career success. Using a multi-source, multi-wave dataset of 114 supervisors, we found that humble leaders were more likely to occupy central positions in subordinates’ help seeking and voice networks and such network positions contribute to their career success.
