Abstract:
Whether or not an internationalization strategy will help firms improve their performance has been a long-standing dispute with different viewpoints: positive linear, negative linear, U-shaped, inverted U-shaped, horizontal S-shaped, N-shaped, or even irrelevant. We apply a quantitative study of literature from 1987 to 2016 combining Meta-analysis and Meta-regression approaches. The main conclusions are: On the whole, internationalization and performance are significantly positively correlated; the main reason for the highly diversified empirical results is that there are too many moderators, so we further apply the Meta-regression technique to explore them from four aspects: Variable operationalization, sample firm, literature source, and research method. This combination of study method not only integrates existing research and resolves current theoretical disputes, but also explores moderating mechanism, while providing a novel and feasible framework for comprehensive quantitative literature analysis.
