The Influence of Senior Management’s Ethical Leadership on Employees’ Community Citizenship Behaviors: The Mediating Role of Prosocial Motivation

Abstract:
      There is growing evidence highlighting a positive relationship between ethical leadership and employees’ organizational citizenship behavior at work. However, the relationship between ethical leadership and community citizenship behavior remains unexplored. In this study we examine whether the ethical leadership of senior management encourages employees to exhibit community citizenship behavior through enhancing their prosocial motivation. Drawing on data from 160 employees in 48 small and medium-sized enterprises in China, we find that although ethical leadership of senior management predicted employees’ involvement in community citizenship activities organized by the organization (internal community citizenship behavior) through enhancing their prosocial motivation, it did not predict employees’ community citizenship behavior undertaken voluntarily by the employee outside the organization (external community citizenship behavior).
