Relationship Between Union Instrumentality, Union Commitment and Job Involvement in the Chinese Context: A Moderated Mediation Model

Abstract:
      Purpose —The purpose of this paper is to investigate how procedural justice (PJ) mediates between union instrumentality (UI), union commitment (UC) and job involvement (JI) in the Chinese context, with type of company ownership in a moderating role. Design/methodology/approach—Data were collected by questionnaire. A multilevel, moderated mediation model tested the hypothesis with data from 703 new-generation employees in 21 state-owned and 22 privately owned enterprises in southern China. Findings — UI was positively related to PJ, UC and JI. Moreover, PJ acts as the mediator between UI, UC and JI. Finally, the mediation function of PJ is stronger in state-owned enterprises than in privately owned enterprises. Originality/value —This research investigates how employees’ UC and JI react to UI in the Chinese context.
