Abstract:
Drawing from the trait-activation model and social-cognitive theory, this paper propose a multilevel moderated mediation model to examine when and why narcissistic personality employees exhibit proactivity or taking charge in China. Data from 274 full-time employees in 59 teams in twelve Chinese enterprises demonstrated that narcissism had positive effect on team member proactivity via organizational-based self-esteem(OBSE). In addition, shared leadership was found to strengthen the relationship between narcissism and OBSE. Finally, the indirect effect of OBSE between narcissism and team member proactivity was stronger when shared leadership was high. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are also discussed.
