Abstract:
Drawing on basic psychological need theory, we postulate that an indigenous Chinese concept, guanxi HRM creates a social environment undermines employee well-being by frustrating employees’ basic psychological needs and the value of perseverance would mitigate the detrimental effect of need frustration on employee well-being. We tested this moderated mediation model based on a survey of 321 Chinese employees using structural equation model and regression. The results are consistent with our hypotheses except for the moderating effect of perseverance on the relationship between need frustration and overall employee well-being. This study contributes to the literature of HRM through a context-specific approach, and enriches our understanding of employee well-being via the basic psychological need theory.
