To Dedicate or Not, Efficacy Matters: The Role of Perceived Team- and Self-efficacy in Determine Team member’s Effort via Team Identification

Abstract:
      Team members tend to invest effort differently based on their perceptions of their team and themselves. Applying social identity theory, this research examines the association between member’s perception of team-efficacy and team-focused effort under the mechanism of team identification. We test the moderating effects of self-efficacy on the relationship between team-efficacy and team identification. Data were collected in two studies—a field study in 4 organizations among long-term teams and a survey study among temporary student project teams. Results from both studies consistently demonstrate the same main effect of team-efficacy on team identification, whereas indicating the moderating effect in opposite directions unexpectedly. In addition, both studies suggest a moderated mediation model as proposed. We discussed the similar and different patterns from the two studies, and argued that the different moderating effects are due to different forms of teams in the two studies, which suggests further research directions.
